Fly casting is arguably the prerequisite of successful and enjoyable fly fishing. Without the ability to successfully present your fly to the fish failure is likely.

Almost without exception fly casters have a single ambition in their casting – to cast further. Yet practice as they may, distance seems to increase so slowly, and at such effort.

All too often even the experienced fly caster is making basic errors, errors ingrained by hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of repetition. The easiest method of identifying these errors is by means of lessons from a qualified casting instructor.

The aim of our tuition is to assist in making a more efficient cast with less effort – to make longer casts with less effort – and to assist the caster in understanding the WHY of flycasting.

Flycasting lessons as taught by Jon and our other Casting Instructors are based on the principles of the Instructors Handbook of the Federation of Fly Fishers and are individually tailored to the skill and standard of the particular student or students. More importantly the lessons are designed to be FUN and to offer a rewarding learning experience regardless of the experience of the particular student.

Jon is based on the Gold Coast, but lessons are held in various locations South East Queensland and northern New South Wales, and by arrangement further afield, by Jon and other Certified Instructors. We offer access to ALL registered Certified Instructors in South East Queensland.

To learn the arm movement involved in fly casting, which makes the rod, and by extension the line, perform as the caster wishes, teaches the HOW, but little more. The student has little concept of WHY the motion works to achieve the particular result. The HOW type of instruction is important, but lacks serious casting education.

For this reason our lessons are aimed to focus not only on the HOW but also on the WHY aspect of casting. In the words of Gary Borger “Learn the WHY and the HOW becomes just a matter of practice.”

We believe this is what sets our approach to casting instruction apart from that of competitors in our field.

Charges per hour are as follows:
Individual – $ 90
Two to three participants – $ 60 each
Four to ten participants – price on application.
